Name of Deceased: BANKS John W.

Date of Death: 22JUL1890

Publication: Smyth County News, August 21, 1890

Pastor of Mt. Pleasant M.E. Church, Marion, Va. This excellent man and honored minister of Christ was born in Baltimore, Md., Sept. 12, 18??, died at Marion, Va., July 22nd, 1890. He was converted in the city of Baltimore about 17 years ago. He was licensed to exhort in the church of his choice, and as a local preacher, from which standard of christian work he was promoted to an itinerant in the Washington Conference in 1882. He received his first appointment March 1882, to Newbern circuit, which work he performed with ardent christian zeal for four years, gaining many souls for the Master's kingdom by his christian examples, and made many warm examples, who cherish his memory with most ardent love. Thence to Fincastle circuit in 1886, at which place he did a noble work toward the upbuilding of the christian cause. Thence, to Marion, March 1888, at which place his useful life ended. Bro. Banks was a great sufferer for more than twenty years. He was badly frost bitten, which after causing him many years of unlimited suffering, resulted in his death. Notwithstanding all his suffering, Bro. Banks was, as a man, kind and cheerful in all the relations of life; as a husband and a father he was beyond the eulogy of the pen. He was a man of prayer, full of faith and zeal, well acquainted with the scriptures. Every sermon was distinguished by these things, plain, practical, but pungent; he dealt with the great truths and duties of God's word. As a christian, he was a man of extraordinary purity. His religious experience was deep. The garment of Holiness with which he was adorned glittered with the light of truth. On the 15th March, 1890, before having a medical operation performed, which he thought perhaps would result in death he wrote a confidential letter to Rev. G.T. Wright, P.E. of Wytheville district, concerning his spiritual and earthly affairs, entrusting to his care the burial of his body and arrangements for his dear wife and children. He told him in that letter how the gospel, which he had preached unto others was supporting him in this the hour of death. He requested him to tell his ministerial brethren that "he had fought the good fight; he had kept the faith and was then ready to be offered up, also he had fallen also he had fallen on the battlefield facing the enemy." By his request his remains were interred in Newbern cemetery, Newbern, Va. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.J. Wimms, pastor of Newbern circuit, in D+M20ublin church, Dublin, Va., July 24th, 1890. Having considered the life and labors of a man like the one whose loss we so deeply feel, we can only offer the following preamble and resolutions: Whereas, It has pleased Almighty God in his infinite wisdom to call from our midst, our beloved pastor and friend, Rev. Jno. W. Banks, and whereas, it becomes us, as the Sunday School of Mt. Pleasant M.E. Church, to manifest our respects for his labor among us, and our grief for his death. Therefore, Resolved. That our church and community sustain an inexpressable loss. That we deeply sympathize with his wife in her sore bereavement and his small children in the loss of the influence of so faithful a christian parent. That we ever remember them in our prayers as an evidence of our love for his family. That the church be draped in mourning for a suitable length of time. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of deceased and to the editor of the Southwestern News, at Marion, Va., for publication. Signed: Susie D. McClanahan, Nannie F. McClanahan, Lucie H. McClanahan

Date of Death: 1APR1922

Publication: Smyth County News,

The funeral of Mr. Noah Dean was held Sunday afternoon. After a short service at the home, the body was carried to South Fork Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted there and the body laid to rest in the old cemetery. Noah Caltron Dean was born Dec. 7th, 1847 and departed this life April 1st, 1922. He professed faith in Christ at a protracted meeting held at the South Fork Baptist Church which was conducted by Revs. N.C. Baldwin and Kitz Miller. His first marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Moore, who preceded him to the grave twenty-eight years ago. To this union, thirteen children were born, four of whom have gone on before him. We believe they are with him in the Heavenly Home to-day. Nine children are left to mourn the loss of their father. His last marriage was to Mary Overbay on December 15th, 1894. He lived a consistent christian life for fifty-four years, having lived to be seventy-five years, three months and twenty four days old. Late in life he united with the Presbyterian Church and was an honored member of that communion at the time of his death. "Not dead; what a beautiful thought; To cheer us thro' life's dreary way.; Not dead; But bloomed into life; Where time is eternally day,; Not dead; 'Tis a glorious hope,; And lessens the burdens we bear; As we lay our beloved away; To know we shall meet, "Over There."

Name of Deceased: ECHOLS William C.

Date of Death: 2APR1890

Publication: Smyth County News, April 17, 1890

William C. Echols died of consumption at his residence near St. Clairs Bottom, Smyth County, Va, 2nd April 1890. The subject of this sad notice was born in Nottoway County, Va., 2nd May 1841. He came to this county in 1868, where he was married to Miss Louisa R. Shaver at Holston Mills. He was a Confederate Soldier for three years in the late war, and was taken prisoner six months at Point Lookout. An affectionate husband and father, a true citizen and a kind neighbor; he was loved and respected by all who knew him. A few days before his death he professed faith in Christ and gave many evidences that he was going where there is no suffering or sorrow. He told his friends not to weep for him, and in his last moment exclaimed: "I'm standing on a firm foundation, praise the Lord I am so happy," and passed away to God. His remains were taken to St. James Church 3rd April, followed by a large procession of sorrowing relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.F. Maiden and C.T. Rouse, after which his body was taken out to the grave and placed away in hope of a resurrection to immortality. He leaves a wife, three sons, three sisters, three brothers, and a number of friends and relatives to mourn their loss. But we say to all weep not for him, for we are sure a good man has gone where sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more--that he is now basking in the sunlight of Him, whom to know aright is eternal life. C.T.R. April 7, 1890

Name of Deceased: HUBBLE Clarence Lelia

Date of Death: 24AUG1890

Publication: Smyth County News, August 28, 1890

At Chatham Hill, Sunday evening, Aug. 24th, at 2 o'clock, little Clarence Lelia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Hubble, of Typhoid fever, aged 1 year 8 months and 26 days. She had been very ill about 12 days previous to her death. Her physician worked earnestly and faithfully, but with all that scientific and medical, she fell a victim to death's cold hand. The vacant chair of little Clarence we see, the youngest of our little band of three, The babe we loved and so often caressed, Is now in heaven with the rest. And now if out of glory, Her face like a star should shine, Could I guess the beautiful changeling, Had ever on earth been mine. I should vail my eyes at her splendor, But never forget my lack, The clinging hands of my baby, And the mouth that kissed me back. Little Clarence was much admired as a child by those who knew her, and was very promising in deed to her now bereaved parents. We tender our sympathy to the bereaved father and mother, and remember "That God works in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform." A.C.J.-Chatham Hill, Va. Aug. 26, 1890

Name of Deceased: MEEK Lydia (Tilson)

Date of Death: 10OCT1912

Publication: ,

Mrs. Lydia E. (Tilson) Meek died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.F. Stone, Wytheville, Va, a little past eleven o'clock p.m. October, tenth, nineteen hundred and twelve. Mrs. Meek was in many respects a notable and remarkable woman. She was in her ninety-third year, born in what was then Washington County, March fifteenth, eighteen and twenty. Her unusual strength of intellect was shown by the details and tenacity of her memory. She recounted accurately events and incidences of her childhood, when there was not a house in the now long established town of Marion, and when court was held in the old Thomas house, a mile East of its present corporate limits. Mrs. Meek was the daughter of William and Abbie (Cole) Tilson and the graddaughter of Sampson Cole, who found protection from the Indians in the St. Clair's Bottom Fort. The Coles came from New York City and owned lands on the site where the metropolis now stands. They were pioneers and emigrated to the lands secured by them about Seven Mile Ford, some two hundred years ago. The first dry goods sold in that section was brought from New York by the brothers Sampson and Joseph Cole. In her twenty-third year, Aug. 21, 1842, Miss Lydia E. Tilson was happily married to Steven A. Meek and they became the parents of seven children, three of whom preceeded them to the spirit world; Callie, who died April 1865, in her sixteenth year, Mrs. Eunice Copenhaver, wife of Marion Copenhaver, in the year 1888, and Charles J. Meek, who died in Smyth County about five years ago. Those who survive the mother are W.H. Meek of Meadow View, Mrs. Abbie J. Anderson, Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Mattie Stone, Wytheville and Mrs. Nannie Smith of Girard, Kansas, also as only surviving sister Mrs. Bell McKee of Saltville. Mr. Steven A. Meek her husband, a public spirited citizen, a man of peace and a peace maker, and for many years he was a faithful officer and exemplary churchman. Mrs. Meek lived to number unto herself five generations of descendants, aggregating more than two hundred souls. Not until her thirtieth year was she consciously converted. She often told, with delight, how that at home in secret prayer and meditation, she soliloquized one day as follows: "If I am lost it is just that I should be lost; if I am saved it will be through the grace and mercy of God." Then and there a voice seemed to speak to me, near and unmistakable, saying, "He'll forgive what is past, and a blessing enveloped me of conscious peace and pardon and I was inexpressibly happy." Hear this sinner friend! That consciousness of forgiveness and peace she carried through life--sixty years. Mrs. Meek was a woman of exceptional physical strength and proportions. The beauty and grace of her person in young womanhood and the preserved vigor of her body and mind was truly wonderful. She was possessed of strong yet feminine features; and the buoyancy of her spirit and the vivacity of her intellect, to the last of her long life, marked her a business woman of extraordinary gifts and providence. Her last few years were spent in the loss of sight to things natural, but all her faculties held their grasp and her concepts and perceptions of the spiritual remained as clear and decisive as the intelligence and purity of her character were strong and reassuring. Mrs. Meek's home, in Smyth County was long the abode of contentment and hospitality. Ministers of the Gospel from Texas to the Mason and DIxon Line will remember times of refreshment and communion enjoyed at that prophets country bivouac of Steven and Lydia Meek. She was a devout and a devoted christian of the old type. The spirit of worldliness which she carried in youth was transfixed into the love of sincerity and fidelity for a pious husband's helpmate and for her children's ??? culture in exemplary manhood and womanhood. They rise up today and call her blessed. She was not a conspicuous and demonstrative christian. In her was no cant o sanctity, no publicity of superior claims to Divine favoritism. She enjoyed convivial life and the innocent amenities of the social and beautiful and exhilerating in life, even to the last of the long tenure of nearly one hundred years. For some months during the past summer, sister Meek paid a round of visits to her people in Southwest Virginia as though to un-obstrusively say "farewell." A few days ago she returned to the spacious and cordial home of her daughter, Mrs. A.F. Stone, as if from that familiar mooring place to trim the sails and adjust the cordage of her time-worn craft for the last voyage down the river and out into the boudnless expanse to the Celestial City. 'Her parting words of faith and hope were few but reassuring. She needs no mausoleum, or gilded epitaph. God will guard her sacred dust till the great day and her deeds are written the lives of the hundred she has projected and promoted in blessing upon her generation. In Christ, as an infant foes to sleep in its mother's arms, she went to sleep to earth; as if to ever, "Say not to me good-bye; but in some fairer clime bid me good morning." -John E. Naff

Name of Deceased: RUTHEFORD Anderson

Date of Death: MAY1890

Publication: Smyth County News, May 15, 1890

Another terrible and fatal tragedy occurred near Fox post office, in this county, on last Saturday evening in which Anderson Rutheford was shot and killed by Columbus Hash. The killing occurred about one mile from Bryant's store on the road leading to the river at Halsey's Ford. As we get it the difficulty which resulted in the death of one of the parties arose from a dispute about a line fence. It is impossible for us to get particulars. Two of Hash's brothers and a son of Rutheford were present at the time of the shooting. The fatal shot was fired and entered just above the left eye, penetrating the cranium at that point and remaining somewhere in the head. The shot was fired about five o'clock Saturday evening and the wounded man instantly fell and remained unconscious till the time of his death, about 11 o'clock that night. On Monday Hash gave himself up and had a preliminary hearing before magistrate who bound him over in a bond of $15,000 to answer an indictment.--Grayson Gazette

"A Good Woman Called From Earth to Heaven" Mrs. Martha Sprinkle, wife of Mr. E.N. Sprinkle, deceased, died at her late residence (Marion House) last Thursday night at 9 o'clock, in the 56th year of her age, after a lingering illness of several weeks from paralysis. Mrs. Sprinkle was an estimable lady, and highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was a zealous christian and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. She leaves three daughters and one son, all of mature age, to mourn their loss, and who can truly say, "Tis hard to give our mother up, But we will be resigned, To Him who is too wise to err, Too good to be unkind. Human hands have tried to save her, Sighs and tears are all in vain; Happy angels came and bore her Away from this world of pain." Mrs. Sprinkle was a lady of great energy in her business transactions, and was well known by many people from all over the country as a land-lady, having kept a hotel in this place for many years, and in that capacity she will be greatly missed by many old and substantial friends who made her house their home when in Marion. Her funeral services were held at her house at 2 p.m. last Sunday, conducted by Rev. Geo. A. Maiden, her pastor, assisted by Rev. D.A. Glenn, of the Baptist church, and Rev. N.B. Wickham, of the Methodist church, after which her remains were conveyed to Roundhill Cemetery and buried in a beautiful section, which she had selected for a family burying ground, three years ago. A very large concourse of relatives and friends attended the funeral services and interment. In death her Marion loses one of her most useful and enterprising ladies. She rests in peace.

Name of Deceased: STONE Mattie Meek

Date of Death: 29APR1921

Publication: Smyth County News,

The following memorial address was made by Rev. John M. Crowe at the funeral of Mrs. Stone, and is published by request of family and friends: Mrs. Mattie Meek Stone, daughter of Stephen A., and Lydia E. Meek, wife of A.F. Stone, was born in Smyth county, Va., Dec. 8, 1853, and died in Wytheville, Va., April 29, 1921, aged 67 years, 4 months and 21 days. She was the devoted mother of nineteen children, 8 sons and 11 daughters. Twelve, 4 sons and 8 daughters, survive, with their father, to offer the last loving tribute to her revered memory, and all are present. Under the ministry of Rev. T.R. Handy she was converted when a young girl of sixteen, joined at once the Methodist Church, and ever since had been, for over half a century, a consistent, consecrated member of her Church. One trait of her resplendent character types everything that makes for righteous worth:-the Book of God was to her the god of books. Eleven times she had read through the Bible, and was half through reading it the twelfth time when she was suddenly called to wrap her soul in the white folds of its precepts, pillow her dying head upon its precious promises of peace, and enter upon the eternal enjoyment of its fulfilled hopes. God saved her the painful process of a lingering, languishing sickness, and in the silence of the night watches, alone with her devoted husband and with her loved and loving God, as a child falls to sleep on its mother's bosom, she passed serenely to her rest and reward, to the General Assembly and the Church of the First Born. Another trait types a fair character. Not only her own large family was nurtured in the hospitable home of brother Stone and his self-denying wife, but fifteen others, homeless ones, were adopted by them and trained for useful lives. I heard a Voice the other night, a divine voice, saying: "In as much as ye have done it unto one of these ye have done it unto Me, enter into the joy of thy Lord." And again. The social values of any life are to be found in its multiplied offspring. The peril of our modern civilization comes from the under-world where are spawned the miserable heirs of diseased, depraved parentage. Napolean said, "The need of France was more and better mothers." It is the need of every zone and people. If the Ship of State, as well as the Old Ship of Zion, is submerged and goes to untimely death, it will be due to the fact the some lights of the nation have gone out. And, be it ever remembered. "Home's not merely four square walls. Though with pictures hung and gilded, Home is where affection calls, Filled with shrines the heart hath builded." Sister Stone, as faithful wife, as devoted mother, was a home-lover, a home-builder. Solomon has told us of such as she:--"She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruits of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates" (Prov. 31:26-31) A married love fifty years old and pure is a very endearing and enduring investment in human life. Herein the riches that abide, the love that abounds, the life crowned with God's "well-done." None of us ever has but one mother, and when she has been true to the trust of motherhood she leaves to her children a legacy of priceless wealth and peerless worth. "She is not dead whose noble mind Lifts ours on high; To live in hearts she leaves behind Is not to die." Cherish ever in your chastened hearts the fragrant memory of faithful wifehood, affectionate motherhood, devoted sisterhood, an unselfish friendship, a love-worthy, trust-worthy christian womanhood, the elect of Heaven's Fatherhood and so there is sure to be a happy reunion in the final home of the good beyond the sunsets of time. The affectionate devotion of Brother Stone, so tender and watchful during her latter days, and of the children, tells the story of the gracious benediction of life upon the lives of the loved-ones, more enduring than monumental marble. God has written the epitaph of all such as was she:--"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, for they rest from their labours and their works do follow them."

Name of Deceased: WIMER George Marshall

Date of Death: 16JUL1905

Publication: Smyth County News, July 21, 1905

G. Marshall Wimer, aged 55 years, died at his home 2 miles South of Marion last Sunday morning after a brief illness of typhoid fever. The deceased was a stone mason by trade and was well known in this section of the county. He was an industrious hard working man and leaves a wife and 6 children who depended upon him for their support. His eldest son is one of the young men who was so seriously injured in the accident at the quarry a few weeks ago. It is thought that nursing the son with loss of sleep caused the father to contract fever from which he never recovered. Mr. Wimer was an adherent of the Roman Catholic church and we suppose died in that faith. A funeral service was conducted from his home by Rev. J.W.S. Neel after which the remains were conveyed to Round Hill cemetery and laid to rest.
